Negotiations between the City of Guelph and representatives of CUPE locals 241, (Outside) 973, (Inside) and 1946 (Library) ended early this morning, at which time union representatives informed the City of the local affiliated groups’ plan to begin a work stoppage, which will take effect at 12:01 a.m., Wednesday February 15th, 2006.

A work stoppage will affect a number of City services. A complete list of affected services is included in the attached backgrounder. City services such as Fire, Police and Transit and their respective unions, are not involved in this work stoppage. Essential services, such as water distribution and wastewater treatment will continue to be provided. Mayor Kate Quarrie advises, “The City has full contingency plans in order to continue to provide some services to residents.”

Residents are advised to visit the City’s Web site for updates on the work stoppage. The City will provide updates regarding this matter as they are available through the local media.
