Friendly Advise

Thursday, August 10, 2006

Hey gang,

I got an e-mail warning from a concerned reader that somebody was getting in touch with people posting to the classified section and asking for their telephone number and/or street address. This, as yet unnammed, individual lives in a foreign postal code (I mean abroad), so they are obviously uninterested in the item and more interested in your personal information.

For your information, the e-mail in question looks something like this:

"Hello I am using this medium to notify you of my interest in purchasing your Item on behalf of my client. My client has specifically given me a quote and placed an order for your particular Ad item, hence the need to get in touch with you for negotiations. I will want to ask if you would accept a cashiers check or money order from my client as a mode of payment. If yes, please forward your
postal contact details, your telephone numbers and the name which you want the check to be addresssed to. I am counting on your support in concluding this transaction within the shortest possible time."

This is just a reminder to be careful with whom you give your personal info; if they're local, try and meet at a neutral spot on campus and if they do live out of town and are wanting to buy something FROM you, then you are the one that should be getting a mailing address so that YOU can send it to THEM.

I not saying this to put anyone off posting their for saleables at theCannon.ca, I just want everybody to be safe with their Internet selling - especially going into our busy Back To School season.

Thanks everybody and Stay Tuned.
