Six University of Guelph business students will spend March 15 to 20 experiencing what it's like to be homeless as part of the national "5 Days for the Homeless" fundraiser.

The students will sleep outside on campus, rely on donated meals and will not have access to money or showers. The students must remain on campus the entire week, attend all their classes and maintain employment and extracurricular activities.

The goal is to raise money and awareness of homelessness, with proceeds from the Guelph fundraiser going to Wyndham House, a local organization that provides co-operative housing for youth.

U of G is among nine universities from across Canada taking part in the campaign. The students will be homeless from March 15 at 5 p.m. until March 20 at 5 p.m.

The campaign, which started in 2006, was created by three University of Alberta business students as a way to support the disadvantaged and help change public perceptions of business students.

This is the second year business students from Guelph are taking part in the event. Participating students are: Graeme Close, marketing management; Michelle Siman, hotel and food administration; Jaclyn Bell, marketing management; Joshua Nasielski, Environmental Economics and Policy; and Marc Tytus, Hotel and Food Administration .

The Guelph group will be sharing their experiences through a blog. Pledges to the campaign may be made online or to the students in person. More information about the campaign is available online.

Not sure how this is truly like “experiencing homelessness”. A good part of their day will be spent in class and studying, outside from the cold. I can’t recall the last time I saw a homeless person in a public library reading without being swiftly kicked out.
