Getting sick of writing midterms and essays? Why not try a limerick, a sonnet or even a haiku. Today is World poetry day. First established by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1999, the day is celebrated all over the world with festivals and various poetry competitions. It is designed to promote the reading writing and sharing of poetry around the globe.

The holiday was thought to have started being celebrated informally all the way back in the 1930s and some think it is related to the anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth on April 23. This year’s celebrations will pay a special tribute to Chilean author and Nobel Laureate Pablo Neruda. The day was even marked by Iran which hosted a book fair and poetry night in its capital city of Shiraz.

So how can you, the average Guelph student get in on these celebrations?

Although there’s nothing in particular planned for Guelph or on campus, it’s not hard to put a little poetry into your life. How about writing your roommates a little cinquian about the state of the mounting dirty dishes in the sink? Just leave it on the counter as you run out the door to go to class, it’s sure to do the trick. Another idea is to leave a short sonnet for that cute undergrad you spot across the room at Trappers. Walk by them and leave it on the bar. Remember to be stealth. Sure it’s a little outdated but its much better then randomly coping a feel, just putting that out there.

However you get in the sprit is up to you and remember it doesn’t have to be today. April is also officially National Poetry Month in the US.
