Written by Greg Beneteau

Dear cannon users,

In the past 24 hours, it has come to my attention that a housing classified posted on thecannon contained language that overtly dscriminated against renters based on their race.

Thecannon has a zero tolerance policy for discrimination of any kind - this is reflected within thecannon's User Agreement, which all users are required to abide by when posting claassifieds on thecannon.

In light of today's events, the language of the human rights policy contained within the User Agreement has been made more explicit. I strongly encourage users to familiarize themselves with the Agreement before posting on thecannon.

I would like to strongly emphasize that neither thecannon nor its co-owners, the Guelph Campus Co-op and the Central Student Association, condone the views implied within the ad,which are  unrepresentative of the campus community. I apologize to anyone who might have viewed the advertisement and who was offended by it.

The discriminatory language contained within the ad violates the policies of the University of Guelph, the CSA, the Co-op, and thecannon. It is likely a violation of the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Further, its just plain wrong.

The ad in question has been removed from the website, and the user who posted it has had their account removed thecannon. We are co-ordinating with authorities on campus and in the city to see what further actions can be taken.

Thecannon respects the policies of the Central Student Association and the University of Guelph, which prohibit discrimination and harassment based on all grounds identified by the Ontario Human Rights Code: sex, sexual orientation, race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed (faith), age, marital status, family status and same-sex partnerships, and receipt of public assistance.

Users interested in learning more should consult the guide on Human Rights at the University of Guelph or the Declaration of Student Rights contained within the CSA Policy Manual

Thecannon is an online community made up largely of students and residents in Guelph. As such, we rely on your help to flag down offensive ads such as this one. In the last 12 hours, Im happy to say that we have received multiple tips from members of this community.

I encourage people to be vigilant, to ensure thecannon remains a safe online space for everyone. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me any time.
