CFUW Open Meeting
Judith Yan, Speaker at CFUW Guelph's September meeting.
Tuesday, September 24, 2013
Tonight's Speaker, Judith Yan, is Artistic Director, Guelph Symphony Orchestra. She is also Music Director and Principal Conductor of Newfoundland and Labrador’s annual summer festival “Opera on the Avalon". Her work takes her all over the world.
Yan came to Canada from Hong Kong with her family in 1977, settling in Toronto. The piano lessons she took as a child progressed to music studies at the University of Toronto, first in piano and composition and later in conducting. Yan’s conducting teacher and mentor was Montreal-born Pierre Hétu, who taught at U of T in the 1990s; he introduced her to the world of conducting and brought her to the attention of Richard Bradshaw, who was then the General Director of the Canadian Opera Company.
This in turn led to a 3 year position as Conductor in Residence for the Canadian Opera Company. From that propitious beginning, Yan developed a career that spans the world. She has worked with the San Francisco Opera, the National Ballet of Canada and the Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle, Washington and has conducted opera, ballet and symphonic performances for major companies in Italy, Germany, Hong Kong, New Zealand and the United States.
